A special note from ECS.  As we return from Labor Day, let’s all reflect on the spirit of the holiday, which includes taking time off and recharging our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. With that in mind, we hope this Newsletter will reinforce that reflection.

Business Insider reported that at least four high-profile executives at the cutting edge of the AI industry have stepped down from their roles in recent months citing health problems serious enough to prevent them from working at the level they expected from themselves. The CEO of AGI at OpenAI, a cofounder of xAI, the CEO of C3 AI, and the cofounder of Thinking Machines Lab all cited their physical condition as the reason they could not continue. Each situation is different, and the article is careful not to draw a straight line between the work and the illness. But the pattern is visible enough that the question is worth asking directly.

The AI arms race is producing its own kind of casualty, and it is not the one most people expected.

The CEO of a burnout recovery clinic in Zurich who works with executives told the reporter something worth sitting with. If you do not want to fall off the train, you need extreme focus, extreme hours, and constant networking just to keep up. He shared an observation from a Silicon Valley founder who uses AI agents to handle work that used to take a team. The time freed up does not go to family or rest. It goes to more deals, more complexity, more to keep track of. AI did not reduce the load. It raised the ceiling on how much load a single person could carry before something gave way.

This is not only a tech story. Finance and business professionals at the senior level operate inside the same basic dynamic, even if the pace is different. The expectation of availability does not shrink as careers advance, it expands. The complexity of the decisions does not simplify with experience, it compounds. And the professionals who have built their identities around high performance and relentless output tend to be the last ones to recognize when the system is approaching its limits, because the same traits that made them successful make it genuinely difficult to stop.

One of the executives who resigned put it plainly in her statement. Grit and endurance are not the only skills required to have impact over decades. Sometimes the harder thing is to stop, listen, and trust that taking care of yourself today makes it possible to contribute for much longer tomorrow. That is not a wellness platitude. It is a strategic observation from someone who learned it the hard way in a very public setting.

The professionals who sustain high performance over a long career are not the ones who pushed hardest without interruption. They are the ones who figured out how to manage their own energy, attention, and recovery with the same rigor they apply to everything else. That is a learnable set of skills, and it is worth developing before the body starts making the decisions.

If you are a high-achieving finance or business professional who wants a practical framework for staying sharp without burning out, the ECS professional development guide, “Stress, Pressure, and Performance” was built for you. You can find it here: www.elitecareersolutionsllc.com/library.
