CNBC published a piece on a question that derails more interviews than almost any other. Why did you leave your last role? Career expert Erin McGoff, who wrote a book on professional communication, says it is the question people struggle with most, precisely because the honest answer and the smart answer are often not the same thing.

Her read on what is actually happening when an interviewer asks the question is worth understanding. They do not really care why you left. They are scanning for red flags and trying to figure out whether you are likely to leave them too. The question is forward-looking disguised as backward-looking, and most candidates answer the wrong version of it.

The mistake McGoff sees most often is candidates treating the interview like a therapy session. When someone spends time explaining a difficult manager, a dysfunctional team, or a toxic culture, the interviewer stops hearing the details and starts hearing something simpler. This person brings drama. That impression, once formed, is very hard to walk back, and it does not matter whether the candidate's account is completely accurate. Industries are smaller than people think. The interviewer may know the people being described. And even when they do not, the willingness to speak negatively about a former employer raises an obvious question about what this candidate will eventually say about them.

The framework McGoff recommends is straightforward and worth having ready before any interview. Name something genuine you valued about the role you left. Address the departure briefly and in neutral language. Then pivot directly to why the role you are interviewing for is the right next step. The structure keeps the answer honest without turning it into a grievance. A management shift that changed the dynamic of my role is more useful than a detailed account of everything that went wrong. It felt like the right time to move on says nothing objectionable and closes the door cleanly.

For finance and business professionals at the mid-career and senior level, the stakes on this question are higher than they are for someone earlier in their career. A candidate with fifteen years of experience who cannot discuss a departure calmly and professionally raises more concern than a recent graduate who stumbles on the same question. Seniority carries an expectation of discretion. The ability to handle a complicated situation without making it someone else's problem is itself a leadership signal, and this question is one of the fastest ways to demonstrate it in either direction.

The answer to this question should be prepared before walking into any interview, not constructed in the moment under pressure. McGoff is right that having a few ready responses in your back pocket changes the entire experience of a high-stakes conversation. The candidates who seem calm and grounded in difficult interviews are usually not calmer by nature. They are more prepared.
