MSN ran a piece on why bosses are firing Gen Z workers at higher rates and what behaviors are driving the frustration. The article goes through the usual list. Gen Z sets firm boundaries, wants frequent feedback, questions hierarchies, prioritizes mental health, and expects meaningful work rather than simply showing up and paying dues. Managers from older generations often read these behaviors as entitlement or lack of commitment. The article pushes back on each complaint and largely defends the younger generation's perspective.

Both sides of that debate are missing the more interesting point.

For mid-career finance and business professionals, the Gen Z conversation is worth paying attention to not because you need to manage them better, though you probably do, but because the expectations they are bringing into the workplace are forcing a reckoning with norms that have gone unexamined for a long time. When a 24-year-old asks why the process works the way it does, the honest answer is often that nobody actually knows. It has just always worked that way. When they push for clear feedback tied to something meaningful rather than a once-a-year review that tells them nothing actionable, they are identifying a failure that has been quietly limiting the development of professionals at every level for decades.

The feedback point matters more than most organizations acknowledge. The article notes that Gen Z grew up in environments, school, social media, video games, where feedback was constant, specific, and tied to visible progress. The professional world largely does not work that way, and the gap creates friction. But the more useful question for experienced professionals is not how to manage Gen Z's expectations downward. It is whether you are getting the quality of feedback you need to keep developing, or whether you have been operating on autopilot for years inside a system that rewards tenure over growth.

The mentorship piece carries the same implication in reverse. Gen Z is asking for more structured guidance than previous generations demanded. That creates an opportunity for experienced finance and business professionals that many are not taking seriously enough. The ability to develop younger talent deliberately, to translate hard-won experience into guidance that actually accelerates someone else's trajectory, is one of the capabilities that defines the difference between a high-performing senior professional and one who simply has more years on their resume. Organizations notice who builds people and who does not. So do the people being built.

The generational tension in this article is real, but it is a surface-level story. Underneath it is a more durable question about what good professional development actually looks like at any age, and whether the organizations and leaders around you are providing it. If the answer is no, that is information worth acting on regardless of which generation you belong to.
