ECS Newsletter 13 - Your Degree Got You in the Room. It Is Not What Keeps You There.
Source: The Wall Street Journal
I can't believe Newsletter 13 landed on a Friday; the stars were aligned this week!
The Wall Street Journal published a labor market analysis that is getting attention for what it says about new graduates. The more important story is what it says about credentials in general. Honestly, these stories and their stats are changing by the day, just like AI.
The piece examines unemployment and employment data for young workers and finds that college graduates are still faring better than their peers without degrees. But the gap is narrowing, and the reason is worth understanding. A bachelor's degree is no longer a differentiator in the way it once was. Roughly 42 percent of the U.S. workforce now holds one, up from about 36 percent a decade ago. The wage premium that comes with the degree has slipped meaningfully as a result. The article draws a direct parallel to what happened with high school diplomas in the early 1900s, when having one went from rare, to common, to nearly universal, and the advantage it conferred disappeared along the way.
This is not a story about new graduates. It is a story about what happens when any credential becomes widely held. The credential stops doing the work of differentiation, and something else has to take its place.
For finance and business professionals, the parallel is direct. The CPA, the MBA, the professional certifications that once signaled meaningful expertise still matter. But in a workforce where those credentials are increasingly common, and where AI is compressing the time it takes to produce technically competent work, the credential alone is doing less of the heavy lifting than it used to. What differentiates a finance professional at the senior level is not the letters after their name. It is the judgment, the relationships, the ability to synthesize complexity into a recommendation that a decision-maker can act on. Those things cannot be credentialed and they cannot be automated.
The professionals who built their identity primarily around what they have on paper tend to feel the most exposed right now. The ones who built it around what they actually know and can do in difficult situations tend to feel more grounded. That distinction matters more today than it did ten years ago, and it will matter more again ten years from now.
The credential got you in the room. What you have built since then is what determines how long you stay.
