Business Insider published a piece that brought together two voices on the question of AI and work. Peter McCrory, the head of economics at Anthropic, wrote that by considering all available data, AI has caused no material increase in unemployment to date. His read is that the technology is currently skill-biased and labor-augmenting, meaning the people who get the most out of it are skilled users, and it makes them more productive rather than replacing them outright. Mark Cuban responded with a more pointed observation about why that dynamic may hold longer than most people expect.
Cuban's argument is simple and worth sitting with. Models do not know the consequences of their actions. People know what will get them fired. AI suffers from information latency. People understand what they see right in front of them. Those two capabilities, real-time contextual judgment and an understanding of consequences, are what Cuban calls invaluable to every business decision. He does not think AI will match humans in either area for a long time, if ever.
That framing lands differently depending on where you are in your career.
For finance and business professionals who have spent years developing judgment, the argument is reassuring on the surface. The ability to read a room, to sense when a conversation is shifting, to know which number in a presentation is going to create a problem before anyone says anything, these are not skills that get listed on a resume or measured in a performance review. They develop slowly, through repetition and exposure to difficult situations, and they are exactly the capabilities Cuban is describing. The experienced professional who combines that judgment with genuine AI fluency is, in his framing, a business propellant. That combination is still rare.
The more important part of McCrory's analysis is the caveat he includes. Human expertise could decline in importance as models improve. The window where judgment and interpersonal skill represent a durable advantage is real, but it is not permanent. The professionals who treat the current moment as proof that nothing needs to change are misreading it. What the data shows is that AI is not replacing workers yet, not that it will not.
Cuban's conclusion is the one to hold onto. Add AI productivity to the real-time capacity and judgment of humans, and you get the greatest return on both investments. That is not a prediction about the distant future. It is a description of the competitive advantage available right now to any finance or business professional willing to develop both sides of that equation rather than waiting to see which one matters more.
