ECS Newsletter 18 - Your LinkedIn Profile Is Either Working for You or Against You. There Is No Middle Ground.

The Wall Street Journal ran a piece on LinkedIn profiles that actually get people hired. The framing is around job hunters, but the more important point is buried in the second paragraph. Even if you are not actively looking for a new role, an effective LinkedIn presence has become essential in most fields. If you are ever hit with a layoff, it is better to have a sharp profile at the ready than to attempt an emergency makeover.

That last line is worth reading twice.

Most finance and business professionals treat LinkedIn as a job search tool, something to dust off when they need it. That framing is outdated and carries real risk. Recruiters are on the platform constantly, not just when you are available. Opportunities surface through visibility, not just through applications. The professional who has been quietly building a credible presence gets the call before the one who scrambles to update a profile after something goes wrong. The difference between those two people is usually not talent. It is preparation.

The article profiles four people who recently used LinkedIn effectively to land roles. A few patterns run through all of them that apply directly to finance and business professionals.

The skills section matters more than most people realize. One of the job seekers added 56 skills to his profile, pulled directly from the language used in job postings for the roles he was targeting. Recruiters increasingly filter candidates by skills, not just titles. If the capabilities you have built over a decade are not listed in language the algorithm recognizes, you are invisible to searches you should be winning.

Plain language outperforms jargon. One candidate spent 18 years at a large company using internal titles and terminology that meant nothing to outside employers. The work he did to translate his record into clear, specific descriptions of his responsibilities and impact is what got him through the door. Finance professionals are particularly vulnerable to this problem. The work is technical, the internal vocabulary is dense, and the instinct is to lean into specificity. The instinct is wrong. If a hiring manager or senior leader outside your function cannot quickly understand what you have done and why it mattered, your profile is not working.

Referrals still outperform cold applications, but only targeted ones. One of the candidates made the point directly. Do not ask a contact for a general referral and leave the work to them. Identify the specific role, do the research, and ask for a referral to that position. The network exists. Most people are just not using it precisely enough.

The professionals in this article who struggled longest were the ones who treated their profiles as static documents. The ones who moved fastest treated them as living representations of their professional value, updated deliberately, tested against data, and maintained whether or not a search was underway.

That is the standard worth holding yourself to.
