ECS Newsletter 10 - The Early Career Mistakes That Follow You Longer Than You Think
Source: The Wall Street Journal
The Wall Street Journal ran a follow-up column to a recent graduation advice piece. The framing is aimed at new graduates, but the underlying lessons apply to finance and business professionals at almost any stage of an early career. Three of them are worth examining more carefully than the article does.
The first is about brand obsession. The column makes the case that working for a recognizable company name can actually stall development if the role itself does not build real skills. The finance version of this is more subtle. It shows up when professionals optimize for the logo on the offer letter rather than the scope of the role, when they take a narrow analytical position at a well-known firm over a broader finance role at a company they have never heard of. The skills built in the first five to eight years of a finance career are what determine the trajectory of the next twenty. The brand on the resume matters far less than most people think at the time they are making that decision.
The second point is about feedback. The article quotes an entrepreneur and board member who argues that the most dangerous early-career manager is not the demanding one. It is the one who never challenges you. Finance and business professionals who spend their first few years in environments where honest feedback is withheld or softened tend to find out later, and usually at the worst possible moment, that they have significant gaps they were never made aware of. A manager who keeps it real and pushes back is an asset. One who consistently tells you that everything looks great is often just managing their own discomfort.
The third is one most professionals underestimate early on. The article notes that backdoor references are common, meaning recruiters reach out to former colleagues beyond the ones you selected. In finance, where industries are smaller than they appear and senior networks are tightly connected, the way you handled yourself in your first two or three roles has a longer shelf life than most people expect. The reputation you build when you think nobody important is watching tends to surface at exactly the moment it matters most.
None of this is complicated. But it is easy to miss when you are focused on the immediate opportunity in front of you rather than the career you are building over the long run.
