ECS Newsletter 12 - The 80% That AI Is Taking Is Not the Part That Ever Made You Valuable
Source: Fast Company
Fast Company published a piece built around a framework from the CEO of Box that is worth understanding clearly, because it cuts through most of the noise around AI and careers in a way that actually holds up.
The argument is this. When you watch AI handle a task, you are almost always watching it take over the first 80 percent, the heavy processing, the repetitive structure, the volume work that takes time but not judgment. The last 20 percent is where the actual value of the profession lives. Domain expertise. Pattern recognition built over years of doing the work. Relationships that took a decade to develop. The ability to walk into a room and read it. That 20 percent, the CEO argues, is not what AI generates. It is what AI finally gives you more time to do.
For finance and business professionals, this framing is worth sitting with honestly. Think about your own work. The first 80 percent in most finance roles looks like pulling data, building the same models in a slightly different configuration, formatting reports, running variance calculations that follow a predictable structure. AI is absorbing that work now, and the pace is accelerating. If you have been telling yourself that your value is in doing that work well, the framing above is uncomfortable. But if your value is in knowing what the numbers mean, knowing which questions to ask, knowing how to present a financial story to a skeptical audience and move them toward a decision, then AI is not a threat to your career. It is time you are being given back.
The professionals who will struggle in this environment are not the ones whose work AI can replicate. Every profession has repetitive structure. The ones who will struggle are the ones who have not developed depth in the 20 percent, who have spent a career getting very efficient at the 80 percent without building the judgment, relationships, and expertise that sit on top of it. That is a real risk, and it is more common than most organizations want to acknowledge out loud.
The honest question to ask yourself is not whether AI will affect your work. It will. The question is whether you have been building the part of your career that AI cannot touch, or whether you have been optimizing for the part it is already taking.
