Is the MBA Still Worth It? What Business Schools Are Now Telling You (And What They're Not)

Source: The Wall Street Journal

Business schools are getting nervous. According to a recent report in The Wall Street Journal, top MBA programs across the country are now offering discounts of 40 to 50 percent on tuition in an effort to fill seats. Purdue, UC Irvine, Johns Hopkins, and Washington University's Olin School are among the schools slashing prices, with some programs now under $40,000 total. A decade ago, that number would have been unthinkable.

The reason is straightforward: demand for the traditional two-year MBA has softened considerably. Professionals are staying put in their current roles, uncertain about the job market, and questioning whether stepping away for two years is a sound investment when AI is reshaping entire career paths before their eyes. The WSJ piece notes that the share of business graduate students receiving financial assistance has climbed from 48 percent to 62 percent in the last ten years. Schools that once had the luxury of selectivity are now competing for students.

So what does this mean if you are a business professional considering whether to pursue your MBA? A few things worth thinking through carefully.

First, discounted tuition changes the math on the degree. The financial case for an MBA often breaks down when you factor in lost income, tuition debt, and the opportunity cost of two years out of the workforce. At 40 percent off, some of those numbers look different.

Second, the reasons people are hesitating are legitimate. AI is not hypothetical in defense finance. Rate reviews, EAC analysis, and financial planning tools are evolving. A degree that does not keep pace with that reality has limited self-life.

Third, and most importantly, the MBA question in defense and aerospace is not the same as it is elsewhere. In this industry, the degree matters far less than people think early in their careers, and far more in specific transitions later on. Knowing when it actually moves the needle for you is the question worth answering before writing a check for any amount.

That is a conversation worth having before you enroll anywhere.
