ECS Newsletter 11 - The Entry-Level Hiring Comeback Is Good News. Unless You Are Mid-Career and Not Paying Attention.
Source: The Wall Street Journal
The Wall Street Journal reported on a survey of roughly 1,500 executives that produced a finding most people did not expect. Companies that are using AI most extensively are not cutting entry-level hiring. They are increasing it. Nearly three times as many executives said they were bringing on more junior talent in 2026 than scaling back. The reason is straightforward. AI is absorbing the rote administrative work that used to occupy new graduates, which means companies want entry-level professionals who can handle more analytical responsibility from day one.
That is an interesting labor market story and directly conflicts with a recent ECS newsletter entitled, “AI is Cutting Junior Finance Jobs. Here Is What That Means for Your Career” (interestingly enough, also sourced from the WSJ). But the detail buried near the end of the article is the one that matters more for finance and business professionals who are already a decade or more into their careers.
One of the executives quoted put it plainly. If a mid-career professional spent fifteen years developing a senior skill set, and a new graduate with AI fluency can produce comparable output within twelve months, that creates what he called a lot of anxiety in the middle of organizations. He was not being alarmist. He was describing something that is already happening.
The pressure on mid-career professionals is not coming from AI replacing them directly. It is coming from a generation of younger workers who never learned to work without AI and are therefore faster, more comfortable with the tools, and less attached to the workflows that the tools are replacing. That is a different kind of competition than most experienced professionals have faced before, and it requires a different kind of response.
The professionals who will be fine are the ones who combine what younger workers cannot yet have, domain expertise, institutional knowledge, and judgment developed over years of difficult decisions, with the willingness to actually use the tools that are changing the work. That combination is genuinely rare right now. Most experienced professionals are watching the AI shift from a distance and assuming their experience is protection enough. Most younger professionals have the fluency but not the depth. The window to close that gap as a mid-career professional is not permanent.
The survey also found that employers want entry-level candidates who bring both work experience and AI fluency. If that is what companies expect from people just starting out, the bar for what they expect from professionals already in senior roles is considerably higher.
